Portuguese and Lusophone Festival

Over two weeks LOST Theatre, in collaboration with the Portuguese community, will be host to a variety of events celebrating Portuguese and Lusophone Culture. Music, Dance, Poetry, Arts exhibitions, Films...and much more !

WEEK ONE PROGRAMME

Mon 19th April (7.30pm) – HISTORY – “Do Passado Rumo Ao Future: Sinais da Presenca Portuguesa em Inglaterra” by Adelina Pereira, writer, journalist and historian. Presentation about the presence of the Portuguese in England throughout the centuries. Illustrated with Power Point. (In Portuguese)

Tues 20th April (7.30pm) – FILM - “O Patio das Cantigas” (1942). Comedy by Portuguese film director Francisco Ribeiro. (In Portuguese, no subtitles or dubbing).

Weds 21st April (7.30pm) – DANCE – “Dancas de Portugal” Traditional Portuguese folk dancing by Rancho Folclórico do Centro Desportivo e Cultural Português & Grupo Típico Português.

Thurs 22nd April (7.30pm) – MUSIC – “O Fado é Destino”/ “Fado is Destiny”. An evening of Fado performances.

Fri 23rd April (7.30pm) – DOCUMENTARY (UK PREMIERE) - “Agostinho da Silva: Um Pensamento Vivo” - Documentary film about Prof. Agostinho da Silva. A visionary, philosopher, poet, teacher and a polyglot. Film directed by his grandson, the Brazilian filmmaker, João Rodrigo Mattos. (In Portuguese with English subtitles).

Sat 24th April (4.30pm) – DOCUMENTARY – “Sea and Jungle” directed by Angelo Torres (Sao Tome e Principe). In Portuguese with English subtitles.
Sat 24th April (7.30pm) – DOCUMENTARY (UK PREMIERE) – “Kontinuasom” (Cape-Verde). A journey through Cape Verdean Music and Dance. Screening and Q&A Forum with production team.

Sun 25th April (2pm) – DANCE – “Caculinhas da Umaru” dance group for children (Angola)
Sun 25trh April (3pm) – DANCE – “Sunday Afro Matinees”, Kizomba Dance Workshop + Performance
Sun 25th April (6.00pm) – POETRY – “Poetas de Abril!” by Mina Andala. Brief presentation and Poetry Reading on the Revolution in Portugal of the 25th April, 1974, commonly known as the “Carnation Revolution”. (In Portuguese)


WEEK TWO PROGRAMME

Mon 26th April (7.30pm) – POETRY – “Portugal, Land of Poets and Wine” by Adelina Pereira. Reading of Luis de Camoens and Fernando Pessoa’ poetry (in English). Portuguese musical interludes and wine tasting.

Tues 27th April (7.30pm) – FILM – “O Pai Tirano” (1941) by Antonio Lopes Ribeiro. (In Portuguese, no subtitles or dubbing).

Weds 28th April (7.30pm) – MUSIC – “2Listen” by Ana Joao Correira (violin and accordion) & Daniela Santos (piano). Two young Portuguese performers present an eclectic mix of popular, classical and contemporary music.

Thurs 29th April (7.30pm) – ART – “Portugal’s Perplexing Panels: the meaning of a Portuguese medieval masterpiece” by Malcolm Howe, British historian. (bilingual presentation in English and Portuguese)

Fri 30th April (7.30pm) – DANCE – “No Bin Djumbai” - Traditional Dance and Music from Guinea Bissau

Sat 1st May (2pm) – DOCUMENTARY – “Kontinuasom” (Cape Verde).
Sat 1st May (4pm) – DANCE – “Calculinhas da Umaru” dance group for children (Angola)
Sat 1st May (7.30pm) – MUSIC – “Ozzy” Kizomba singer (Cape Verde) & “Xipane-Pane” drum & dance (Mozambique)

Sun 2nd May (12pm-6pm) – ART – Exhibition by José Batista
Sun 2nd May (2pm) – WORKSHOP – ARTANGOLA, Angolan Woodcraft Workshop
Sun 2nd May (2.30pm) – WORKSHOP – “Sunday Afro Matinees”, Kizomba Dance Workshop + Performance
Sun 2nd May (5pm) – DOCUMENTARY – “Capoeira, dance or fight?” & “Destino” directed by José Fernandes.
